Guest Support Cell: Case Study

February 2008
  • Paramesh Gupta had come for a routine health check up at RTIICS when a sudden feeling of discomfort made him rush to the Emergency. On examination it was found that he had major arterial blockages and an immediate CABG was required to save his life. Paramesh’s wife suffered from breast cancer and a good amount had to be spent for her treatment. With a mediclaim of Rs 60000 that was done for both him and his wife, Paramesh was in a dilemma how to use the money. The 67 year old pensioner had also recently spent a fortune on getting his only daughter married. His daughter came pleading for help to the Guest Support Cell where the package of Rs 1,32,000 for CABG was reduced by Rs 52000. Paramesh’s family was ever grateful to the hospital for the support given and after a successful surgery by our Senior Consultant Cardiac Surgeon Dr.Mrinalendu Das he is now doing well.

  • Debashis Laskar required an urgent AVR surgery to save him. The 25 year old student was really unfortunate as his father too had to undergo a Dual valve change surgery. A middle income government employee Debashis’s father had to solely look after the family and was under lot of stress for gathering the surgical expenditure for both himself and his son. Our Vice Chairman, Dr Ashutosh Raghuvanshi who was treating both of them gave his consent not to charge for the valve required for Debashis, whose surgery could by no way be postponed. The package of Rs 127000/- underwent a large concession and Debashish’s surgery was done successfully.

  • Rony Biswas was just 13 years. His father, a daily laborer from Krishnanagar approached to a church when he came to know that his son was suffering from a heart problem. Two Nuns from the church approached the Cell asking help for the child as the child’s family was very poor. Rony’s condition was very critical and immediate surgery could save him. Angiogram followed by coil embolisation was done by Dr.Biswajit Bandyopadhyay, our Consultant Paediatric Cardiologist & Head-department of Paediatric Cardiology. A high risk open heart surgery was done next by our Senior Consultant Cardiac Surgeon Dr.Mrinalendu Das. The father could arrange Rs 20000/- and the Nuns managed to collect Rs 50000/-.Both the intervention as well as the surgery were performed at this amount and the child saved.

  • 19 years old Rozy Begum suffered from severe headaches and would spend sleepless nights. She required a skull based surgical excision to get relief from the pain. Her father who works as a book binder and earns Rs 4000/- in a month was in  tears seeing the girl’s pain and had to arrange Rs 64000/- to get the surgery done. Some preliminary blood tests were done free and with a considerable amount of concession on the package the surgery was done by Dr.B.K.Swain, our Consultant Neurosurgeon.

Less than 8% of the world's population can

afford a heart surgery.

You can change this.
