Diabetes is no longer considered to be a disease in isolation.
Rather, it is a syndrome of multiple organ
involvement and related symptoms affecting almost all parts
of the body especially the eyes, heart,
kidney, nerves, brain and the feet,
with devastating results. Thus the present day concept of diabetes
care is based upon a strong multidisciplinary break-up/team with the
diabetologist taking up the role of the leader of the coordinator. |

|
The primary step in tackling this problem is identifying the
population at risk, that is picking up
early/potential diabetic, and managing the patient, which
measures probably have their own merits. By treating early we can
prevent the patients from developing the dreaded complications of
this disease and thereby decrease the burden of morbidity and
mortality. |

It is suggested that all elderly
patients, obese patients,
patients having family history of delivery of large baby
should be routinely checked for diabetes. The major path of
treatment rests on lifestyle modification, which includes
proper balanced diet and
regular moderate exercise.
Despite the advances in the treatment these two pillars have
to be necessarily adhered to. |
