This is a type of heart defect in which two great arteries (Pulmonary artery and the aorta) are arising in reversed way. This results in two Parallel Circulation. Oxygen rich blood keep circulating in the lungs repeatedly and deoxygenated blood through whole body causing a bluish discoloration. This becomes evident immediately after birth. Survival depends on any connection between these two circulations, which may be in between the receiving chambers (ASD), pumping chambers (VSD) or in great artery level (PDA).

What are the symptoms
  • Blueness of skin

  • Shortness of breath

Diagnosis

The most important tool for diagnosis is echocardiography by an experienced pediatric cardiologists . This defect can be diagnosed by fetal echocardiography before the child is born.

Treatment

Immediately after diagnosis, a medication called Prostaglandin is started intravenously to keep the ductus open .If not possible a hole in the two receiving chamber (atrial septal defect) may be created by balloon catheter. However a surgical technique called arterial switch procedure brings the permanent relief. This should be done within 21 days after birth if there is no major communications between two chambers of the heart. The child usually grows normally after corrective surgery.
