Pulmonary stenosis (valvular)

1 - narrowed pulmonary valve
Blood flow patterns are normal but blood flow through the pulmonary artery is reduced as indicated by the broken white arrows.

Pulmonic Stenosis means narrowing of the valve guarding right ventricular outflow tract and this leads to enlargement and hypertrophy of the right ventricle.

What are the symptoms

May remain asymptomatic. In severe form it produces cyanosis (bluish discoloration) due to shunting of right sided blood through the opening in the inter atrial or inter ventricular Septum.

Treatment

Only valvular Stenosis can be dilated by trans catheter method. However it may need open heart surgery to relieve the obstruction.
