The heart is a muscle that pumps blood around the body.
Coronary Arteries are the blood vessels that supply blood to
the heart through which it gets nutrient to pump and beat
continuously. Coronary Artery Disease is a condition when
this arteries get blocked by Atheroma, a porridge like fatty
deposits that bulge out from the wall of the arteries.
(Atheroma is Greek word for gruel). If this narrowing is
50% of it’s diameter, it produces chest pain on exertion
called effort Angina. Rupture of these fatty deposits (plaque) may lead to complete occlusion of the
Artery which
is manifested by angina at rest (unstable Angina) or heart
attack (Myocardial Infarction). |

Manifestation: |
-
Angina pectoris is the commonest
manifestation: This often referred to as a
reduced coronary flow reserve that often occur when the
luminal Stenosis exceeds 50%.There is increased demand
(due to physiological stress) than supply (due to
narrowing of the coronary artery. The chest discomfort
is usually described as constricting or pressing too
tight. Angina
equivalent may be manifested by other symptoms
such as breathlessness, pain and radiation to the arm,
jaw, and upper abdomen and back symptom may occur. It may occur either in
isolation or in association. In patients with chronic
stable angina, the pain is usually initiated at
consistent levels of physical stress and promptly
disappears with a cessation of activity.
-
Acute Coronary Syndrome:
Angina at rest, or unstable angina or myocardial
infarction ( heart attack). This is a serious situation
needing hospitalization in a specialized centre. Usually
treated by Thrombolysis or Angioplasty. May need
Emergency Bypass Surgery. Sometimes this situation, if
not managed efficiently, may lead to death.
