Fasting - You must not eat or drink anything for 6 hours before your operation, your nurse will discuss this with you.

Clipping - Depending on your body hair, it may be necessary for hair to be trimmed / removed the evening before or on the morning of your surgery.

Do not wear jewellery to surgery, including mangalsutra, wedding rings etc. Please leave all your valuables and money with your relatives. In the hospital you will not need them.

Pre-Medication - You will be given tablets and / or an injection before you are taken to theatre. This medication will make you feel drowsy and help you to relax. It is important not get out of bed once you have had this medication.

Going To Theatre - You will be transferred to theatre on a trolley and a nurse will escort you. Your close relative will be able to accompany you till you go inside. Before entering theatre a theatre nurse will check your particulars. Once in theatre you will be given an anesthetic to keep you asleep during the operation.

Time in Theatre - Surgery normally takes 3-5 hours. Sometimes surgery can be delayed or even postponed due to the emergency needs of other patients.

Relatives - Relatives will be directed to a waiting area on the ground floor, while the patient is in the theatre. They are allowed to go along with the patient to theatre from the ward where he is admitted. The day before surgery the concerned doctor discusses the risk factors with the relatives so that they are aware of the procedures and can even clarify their queries. After completion of the major part of the surgery the doctor calls up the relatives and explains them how the surgery went on and they are allowed to see the patients through the glass door of the ITU once he or she is shifted and stable.
