Cardiac Anesthesia Service provides anesthesia, sedation, and other assistance for a variety of surgical and interventional procedures.

The Cardiac Anesthesia Service is comprised of twelve full-time Anesthesiologists and each day, anesthesia coverage is provided for the seven cardiac operating rooms and three
Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories

Cardiac OR: The Cardiac Anesthesia Service provides anesthetic support to more than 2,500 cardiac surgical procedures annually. The spectrum of cardiac surgical procedures is one of the best in the country. Adult Cardiac Surgical procedures ranging from “Off-pump” surgery, Multi-valve replacements to Valve repairs, Redo-operations, Thoracoabdominal, Aortic Aneurysm repairs, and “Routine CABG” surgery provide the trainee with a very good exposure to the field of Adult Cardiac Anesthesiology.

Pediatric Cardiac Surgeries constitute 30% of the total and range from simple Atrial Septal Defect repair to palliative and/or corrective procedures for Complex Congenital Heart Disease.

Trans Esophageal Echocardiography (TEE) is routinely performed in all these procedures, leading to the rapid development of the technical and cognitive skills.

In addition, the division anesthetizes patients undergoing
Thoracic Surgery, providing familiarity with Lobectomy, Pneumonectomy and Esophageal Resection.

Cardiac Cath Lab: The Cardiac Anesthesia Service also provides support to the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory. Approximately 700 pediatric procedures are performed annually with anesthesia assistance, including Hemodynamic Catheterizations, Trans Esophageal Echocardiograms, Electrophysiology studies and Cardioversions. Numerous invasive procedures including Valvular Dilatation, dilatation of Aortic Co-arctation, Radio Frequency Ablation procedures, and Device Closures of Atrial Septal Defects, Patent Ductus Arterioses and Ventricular Septal Defects are also commonly performed. Anesthetic techniques range from mild sedation to general anesthesia.
