Blood Bank

The Blood Bank at RTIICS currently collects and processes some 600 units of blood every month and is in the process of having its Blood component facility licensed. 

Equipped with a Refrigerated Centrifuge and Storage equipment for  Red cell concentrate, Fresh Frozen Plasma and Platelet concentrates the Blood Bank provides essential support to the cardiac surgery programme of RTIICS, also meeting the requirements of other patients of ACTC.

 

Infections disease manlier testing is doe on ortho’s ECI  chemiluminescant ELISA system and the Brio ELISA system and red cell ferological testing is done on ortho’s Biovue system.

The Blood Bank is supervised by Dr. Pankaj Shrivastava who has his initial orientation in Transfusion service in 1985 at Trivandrum’s Shree Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences and Technology. 

Since then he was successively been associated with Calcutta Medical Research Institute, BM Birla Heart Research Institute, Lions Dist 322B Blood Bank, Haemophilia Society Calcutta Chapter’s Blood Bank and Belle Vue Clinic.

 

The Laboratory services has been recognised as a training centre for DMLT course by the State Medical Faculty, West Bengal and five students have joined the course in 2005.  The Laboratory is also in the process of seeking accreditation with the National Accrediation Board   for testing and calibration laboratories to achieve conformity with the International Standard ISO 15189:2003


In summary, the laboratory services has set itself the following objectives:

  • Accurate and timely delivery of Test Reports.  Accuracy of results vetted by various third party External Quality Assurance Schemes.

  • Timely delivery of results as vetted by consultants treating patients in a regular structure feedback programme.

  • State of the art and regularly maintained equipment to be used in all activities and continued education and training of all staff members.

  • Successfully training DMLT students.

  • Achieve conformance with NABL (ISO:15189:2003) standards with quality philosophy embracing every activity of every staff.

  • Establish a Laboratory information system and integrate with Hospital Information system.
